Sycamore Hall Care Home has been awarded 5 stars for their Hygiene by Harrogate County Council so well done to all the team!
Sycamore Hall Summer Fete raised over £600!
On Saturday 3rd September Sycamore Hall held its first summer fete. Relatives and friends were extremely generous with donations to our raffle, tombola and cake stall. We also had donations of plants, books and clothes which all sold well. The children were not forgotten with face painting, tattooing, treasure hunts and hook a duck. Refreshments made by the catering staff proved very popular. Fortunately the weather held out for the afternoon so were able to use our beautiful gardens.
We had a massive amount of support on the day from relatives, friends and local people joining us to enjoy the afternoon. The residents thoroughly enjoyed themselves, visiting the many stalls and winning lots of prizes. One of our regular events companies, Oomph Wellness, held a demonstration of their exercises in the garden with visitors joining in the fun.
A massive £601.70 was raised for the residents activities programme. The whole afternoon was a huge success and we would like to thank residents, families, friends, staff and the local community for their generosity.
We are now planning our Christmas Fayre set for 10th December.
The Ice Cream man comes to Sycamore Hall
Local Ice cream company, Royd Ices paid a surprise visit to the residents at Sycamore Hall on the afternoon of 23rd August. His arrival was announced by
the cheery sound of the chimes which brought back memories of past seaside visits and family times.
The residents queued to choose their favourite iced delight including cones, tubs and 99’s. The sun shone and residents, relatives and friends all enjoyed a fun-filled afternoon “down memory lane” with our ice creams.
The visit was kindly funded by the Friends of Sycamore Hall who organise regular fund-raising events to compliment our varied in-house activity programme.
Sycamore Hall Gardens
We are lucky to have extensive gardens at Sycamore Hall although they were mainly laid to low maintenance evergreen shrubs which are attractive even in the winter months but lack colour during summer. As the residents, staff and relatives use the garden regularly (weather permitting of course!) we decided to plant a colourful array of bedding and perennial plants this season.
We had already begun our kitchen garden providing lettuce, tomatoes, potatoes and herbs to the catering staff. However, spurred on by the challenge of the garden competition, it has been all hands on deck to produce a welcoming and diverse garden. We have included sensory plants such as lavender and scented stocks which the residents enjoy.
Relatives and friends have been generous with donations of plants, some coming from their own gardens and allotments. We are also lucky that one of our senior carers has a partner who enjoys gardening and has done some heavy digging and planting for us. The residents have watched the plants grow, helped with dead-heading and watering on a regular basis.
Our future plans are to plant more perennials, plant spring bulbs in the autumn and extend our kitchen and herb garden to include winter vegetables. As many of our residents were keen gardeners in their own homes the gardening project has proved a great success and involved the residents in a productive and healthy activity which they are familiar with.
The names and colours of the plants have provoked interesting conversations and reminiscence sessions.
The gardens at Sycamore Hall now provide a pleasant and colourful environment for residents, visitors and staff to relax and chat. We have used the garden for many of our craft, musical and exercise activities and look forward to progressing the project over the next months.
